... first broke the world high jump record in September 1988, when he cleared 2.43 metres (7 feet 11.75 inches). This surpassed the previous record, set in June 1987 by Patrik Sjöberg of Sweden, by one centimetre (0.5 inches). He broke his own record twice: first in July 1989, with 2.44 metres (eight feet exactly) and again in July 1993 with 2.45 metres (8 feet and 0.25 inches).

This is the eighth longest standing world record in men's athletics.
